Hamza Shahbaz Is Dismissed, Pervaiz Elahi Becomes Chief Minister

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, passing judgment on the case against the ruling given by Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Dost Muhammad Mazari on the occasion of the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab, accepted the request of Parvez Elahi.

The three-member bench while delivering the verdict of the 11-page case said that the deputy speaker’s ruling is not correct, he misunderstood the decision of the Supreme Court, his ruling is declared void. The rejected votes were declared valid and 186 votes of Pervez Elahi were restored. In the court’s decision, it has been said that Pervez Elahi will be the Chief Minister of Punjab, Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman will take the oath of Chief Minister from Pervez Elahi at 11:30 pm. If the Governor of Punjab is not available, the President of the State Dr. Arif Alvi will administer the oath to Parvez Elahi. The Supreme Court has ordered the Chief Secretary to immediately issue a notification for Pervaiz Elahi to become the Chief Minister.

In the judgment, Hamza Shehbaz’s oath and subsequent decisions were nullified and ordered that Hamza Shehbaz and his cabinet leave office immediately. The appointments made by Hamza Shahbaz as Chief Minister of Punjab were also annulled.

The case against the Deputy Speaker’s ruling was heard by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial. Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar were also part of the bench. The court had reserved the verdict during the day and said that it will be pronounced at half past six, but later the time of the verdict was changed and it was announced that the verdict would be pronounced at half past seven, even after that the verdict was delayed.

The government coalition requested the court to form a full court bench on the matter, but yesterday the court had rejected this request and declared that only this three-member bench will hear the case. After yesterday’s court decision, the parties involved in the government coalition boycotted the court proceedings.

It should be noted that on July 22, the run-off election of Chief Minister Punjab was held in which the candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chaudhry Parvez Elahi got 186 votes while the candidate of Muslim League-N and coalition parties Hamza Shehbaz got 179 votes. On the occasion of counting of votes, the Deputy Speaker showed the letter of Q-League chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and said that in it the members of Q-League were instructed to vote for Hamza Shehbaz. Since the Q-League members have rejected the party chief’s decision, the 10 votes awarded to Chaudhry Parvez Elahi are rejected. As a result of the Deputy Speaker’s decision, Hamza Shehbaz was elected Chief Minister of Punjab with 179 votes.
